Try These Tips To Help Minimize Mosquitoes Around Your Yard This Summer

1. I think everyone knows that standing water around your home is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Sometimes, though, standing water is not apparent at a glance. There might be a little water on top of a trash can lid that you just don’t notice, or in a potted plant drainage plate. These small pools of water are just enough to harbor mosquito breeding. It is important to not leave a harbor for mosquito eggs around your property. Keep gutters clear of debris; check often in cans, buckets, pots, overturned children’s toys, and anything that can hold even a tiny bit of water. Cover trash containers; change water in outdoor pet dishes regularly; and clean the water in bird baths often too.


2. Move potted plants indoors. Potted plants are the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Move them indoors before bugs move in, or carefully inspect them often.


3. Place herbs and scented oils around your backyard. We have included a list of plants that tend to keep pests away (see below). Certain plant herbs and essential oils can naturally repel mosquitoes within close proximity to your backyard activity. For instance, the scents of citronella, lemongrass, and chrysanthemum, are nontoxic and keep mosquitoes at bay within 1bout 15 feet. Mosquitoes hate scented oils and candles, so if you place these around outdoor areas, they will keep any bugs away from the immediate area.


4. Coffee grounds are easy to come by. You can scatter some coffee grounds around wherever you discover standing water. Mosquito eggs present will be forced to rise to the surface and be deprived of oxygen. This will kill any mosquitoes before they hatch and will prevent them from breeding further.


5. Grow insect-repellent plants. Discourage mosquitoes with plants like Basil, mint, chrysanthemums, marigolds, garlic, eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary and more. See the list below. Luckily, these herbs and plants are loathed by mosquitoes, but quite pleasant to look at and smell.
