Philadelphia Area Rat Population Is Still Growing

Year after year, in an ongoing trend in the Philadelphia area, rodents will be on the rise again this fall and winter. Trend analysis indicates that rats and mice populations are increasing, particularly in the city. Rats to mice and are hardy, resourceful rodents and have found ways to survive even the harshest of winter conditions. During the shutdown, rats expanded territories, and aggressively occupied areas they could take shelter in.

"We are noticing a huge increase in mice and rats. The populations are increasing as buildings remain empty. The rodents, now that winter is approaching, are looking for food. There have been many more sightings in Center City Philadelphia in recent weeks."

Evans Pest Control will help rodent-proof your home or establishment, by installing hardened door sweeps, and treating areas that would harbor rats and mice during the winter. "Repair any gaps on the exterior of the home, like around windows, pipes, and doors. Rodents can squeeze through small holes as they are looking for somewhere warm and with food."
To help keep rodents from moving into commercial spaces this winter, you should contact Evans Pest Control to schedule a walkthrough of the property. Evans Pest Control has extensive experience in rodent control and can address issues, including:

Entrances: Fitting metal rodent proof weather-stripping around exterior doors and install metal door sweeps. Rats squeeze through tiny little gaps as small as a half inch. They will also enlarge gaps by gnawing at them.

Gaps in exterior walls: Filling holes or small openings (around utility cable entrance and pipes) with stainless steel wire wool, and concrete where needed. Steel or aluminum plating is also used in some areas to discourage a rat gnawing through. Rats dig extensive tunnel systems that allow transit to and from your building. These must be identified.

Roofs: Repair roof damage and use wire mesh to seal gaps, and fix vents. Rats prefer to enter through gaps in broken roof tiles and vents.

Trees: Trim tree branches from the building’s exterior. Did you know that Rats climb along electrical cables or use overhanging branches to get onto the roof of your building? They do, it is very common.
Drains and sewer pipes: Repair damages laterals, and drainpipes. Make sure all sewer pipe damage is repaired promptly. Rats have been known to swim up damaged sewer pipes and into bathrooms. Additionally, use metal grates or screens to cover drains.
