What Termite Damage Looks Like - How To Inspect For Termite Infestation With Charles Evans On Location

Detecting Termites Early Can Prevent Damage By These Wood-Destroying Insects.

Charles Evans was in Center City Philadelphia performing a Termite inspection and eradication. Take a video tour with Charles as he shows us what to look for when Termite infestation is present.

One of the most costly and biggest threats to your home is from Termites. These tiny pests consume and live in wood — from the sills in your foundation to your roof, the Termite habitat includes all wooden parts of your house. Wood-destroying insects like the Termite can destroy your home.
“If you can catch them early, you’re going to save yourself a lot of money and maybe even save your house,” says Charles Evans, President of Evans Pest Control.

SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES: The most common type, subterranean termites, cause almost all termite damage. Termites are found in every state except Alaska, termites are common in Pennsylvania and through the south east.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR - 5 TIPS FOR FINDING TERMITES:

1. You can detect an infestation by poking wood with a screwdriver; if the tip goes in easily or you hear a hollow sound when you tap the wood with the handle, you might have a problem. In the video above watch Charles Evans probing a basement in Center City Philadelphia.
2. Be on the lookout for a sandy and gritty gray-brown film on the surface of damaged material. And look for narrow mud tubes on both the interior and exterior of your walls and foundation. Termites run though these tubes between their colony below the ground and their food source.
3. You might spot a swarm in the spring. Termite come out in the open when they swarm. Swarms consist of flying reproductive Termites that leave the colony, mainly in spring, to mate. Look for discarded wings that resemble fish scales. Swarms can emerge indoors or outdoors. Evidence of an indoor swarm, such as discarded wings or the corpses of termites that couldn’t find a way out, is a sure sign your home is infested.
4. Anything that contains cellulose (the main component of wood) and may be close to a moisture source including wood paneling, paper products, cardboard boxes, art canvases, the paper covering of sheet rock, carpeting is susceptible. If you look carefully, you may be able to see Termite tubes running along walls, and you might see fecal pellets called (frass) outside of these tunnels.
5. Look for sagging floors, loose tiles and wood that sounds hollow when tapped.
