Wasps! The Fall Menace

The reason wasps are worse in the fall, is because wasps usually out grow their living space as fall is beginning, and food sources start to run dry.
You’ve probably also noticed that stinging insects become more aggressive in the fall. Here’s Why:

1. Wasps are more active to get their queen, nests, and hives for winter, making them much more protective of their hive. This defensive behavior is made worse as local food resources are depleted, and they grow angry with hunger.
2. As natural food supplies run low (flowers) wasps will change their diet to food high in sugar and carbohydrates to better sustain themselves for winter. Therefore, you tend to see them aggressively hovering around your soda can in the fall months.
3. Hives and nests are increasing in numbers all summer long. In the fall, they have reached their max capacity, so they send out aggressive troops to find food sources to sustain the winter months.

DISCOURAGE STINGING INSECTS FROM ENTERING YOUR HOME:
Wasps will do just about anything to stay alive during the cold weather. If they can find any small opening into your home, they will not attempt to gain a foot hold inside. Here’s what to do:
• Seal off any openings. Make sure to check for small holes in siding. Entry points include rotted areas under your siding, and spaces under your windowsills.
• If you live near a larger wasp population, you can make your home less appealing by getting rid of items that have sweet scents like soaps, and perfumes.
• Keep a lid on your outdoor trash cans – especially if they are located near your home.
• Wasps need sugar in the fall, so if you’ve left juice or soda unattended, stinging insects will be attracted. The more sterile your home is, the less likely you will have wasps trying to get inside.
• Have an Evans Pest Control do an inspection of your home to uncover anything else that could lure in stinging insects.

LOCATE WHERE ARE THEY GETTING IN?
The easiest way to locate problem areas is to watch to see where wasps are entering and exiting your home, if you can see traffic near an entrance, then they probably have already established a foothold. It is advisable to stay away from a wasp nest, so back off if you notice a nest. The safest way to rid your home of bees and wasps, is to call the professionals!
